The City Job Club Tools
Meetings & Events will be valuable for those who are looking for a bit of support in their job hunt. The idea behind them is to create an environment where you can ask questions and be helped by other members on a more personal level. Typical questions range from the simple: "How do you write a cover letter?" to the slightly more complicated and specialized like: "How do I create the fee structure for my such and such service?" You'll be surprised how much other members know. City Job Club is a community. It could not exist without it's members: regular people who want to make a change.

The Forum is also a great way for people to connect and ask the questions they need answered. There are two primary benefits to being active on the forum. The first is that there will be many members who cannot make it to the meetings for any number of reasons; car trouble, no car, kids & family or even a conflicting work schedule. The forums allow them to be active with the community when their free time is a puzzle. The second is that there might be information that could potentially be outdated by the next meeting. The forum, as well as being largely question and answer, is also a place to post about job opportunities you've come across. Those opportunities can be snatched up quickly so it's always a good idea to lightly peruse the forums regularly.

The WIKI is editable by everyone. For those familiar with Wikipedia, you'll know that it is intended to be a place of vast community knowledge. Our WIKI though, is a bit more specialized. It's purpose is to be an encyclopedia of knowledge pertaining to the job-hunt and career-change. It's already been started, a great deal of time has been put into populating it with information. If there is something that you feel is a helpful piece of information, add it to the WIKI and share it with the rest of the community.

Jobs! is basically a miniature monster.com or careerbuilder.com. They say that 80% of jobs openings do not get posted anywhere. Much of this, while the cost of advertising as a company is very expensive, it is also greatly resource intensive. A job ad could generate 500 to 1000 replies. That's a thousand resumes to sort through for just one posting. Large businesses can handle it. They have a department dedicated to filtering through all the applications they get. A small business on the other hand with maybe 20 people doesn't have a Human Resources department. They have a secretary, dictation, phones and sorting through applications person. The cost combined with the resources needed just takes the sense right out of it for those small and medium sized businesses. City Job Club isn't as big as Monster or Career Builder, you *could* call it low profile. That with the fact that those small to medium sized businesses get to post their opportunities on the site for free.. Well, lets just say it makes it a bit more manageable for the little guys. And that means more opportunities for us, the CJC Community.
